Neural Therapy

Modern Treatment for Chronic Pain, Nerve Irritation and Functional Disorders

Neural therapy is a medical treatment method that uses local anesthetic injections to reduce pain, calm irritated nerves and improve the function of muscles, joints and internal organs. It is frequently used for chronic pain, nerve-related pain, muscle tension, headaches, back pain and many other long-lasting complaints.

Our private medical home visit service offers neural therapy directly in your home, office or hotel in Frankfurt am Main, Mainz, Wiesbaden and throughout the Rhine-Main region.

What Is Neural Therapy?

Neural therapy is based on the idea that chronic pain and other symptoms may be caused by disturbances within the autonomic nervous system.

These disturbances may occur because of:

  • Injuries

  • Scars

  • Inflammation

  • Chronic muscle tension

  • Nerve irritation

  • Previous surgery

  • Dental problems

  • Stress

During neural therapy, a small amount of local anesthetic is injected into specific areas of the body. The anesthetic temporarily interrupts abnormal pain signals and may help the nervous system return to a more normal state.

The local anesthetic most commonly used is procaine, although lidocaine may also be used.

How Does Neural Therapy Work?

In chronic pain conditions, the nervous system may remain in a state of irritation long after the original problem has disappeared.

For example:

  • A scar from surgery may continue to irritate nearby nerves.

  • A tense muscle may continuously send pain signals.

  • A joint problem may affect surrounding muscles and nerves.

By injecting a local anesthetic into these areas, neural therapy may:

  • Interrupt the pain cycle

  • Relax muscles

  • Improve circulation

  • Reduce inflammation

  • Calm irritated nerves

  • Improve mobility

Many patients feel improvement immediately after treatment.

Which Conditions Can Be Treated With Neural Therapy?

Neural therapy may be useful for many painful conditions, including:

  • Neck pain

  • Back pain

  • Lower back pain

  • Shoulder pain

  • Joint pain

  • Sciatica

  • Headaches

  • Migraine

  • Tension headaches

  • Facial pain

  • Jaw pain

  • Neuralgia

  • Trigeminal neuralgia

  • Chronic muscle tension

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Scar pain

  • Phantom pain

  • Sports injuries

  • Chronic pain syndrome

  • Pain after surgery

It is also sometimes used for functional disorders such as:

  • Dizziness

  • Sleep problems

  • Digestive problems

  • Menstrual pain

Neural Therapy for Back Pain

Back pain is one of the most common reasons for neural therapy.

Painful areas in the muscles, joints or nerves of the back can lead to:

  • Persistent pain

  • Muscle tension

  • Restricted movement

  • Pain radiating into the legs

The physician injects the local anesthetic into specific painful points in the muscles, joints or connective tissue.

This may help:

  • Relieve pain

  • Relax the muscles

  • Improve movement

  • Reduce nerve irritation

Neural Therapy for Neck Pain and Headaches

Neck tension often causes headaches, dizziness and pain radiating into the shoulders.

Neural therapy may be especially useful for:

  • Stiff neck

  • Tension headaches

  • Migraine

  • Pain at the back of the head

  • Pressure behind the eyes

The injections are usually placed into the tense muscles of the neck and upper back.

Many patients notice immediate relief and better mobility.

Neural Therapy for Sciatica and Nerve Pain

Neural therapy is often used for irritated nerves and radiating pain.

Examples include:

  • Sciatica

  • Pain radiating into the arms or legs

  • Tingling

  • Numbness

  • Burning nerve pain

By reducing irritation around the nerve, neural therapy may help relieve symptoms.

Neural Therapy for Scars

Scars from surgery, accidents or injuries may sometimes become a “disturbance field.”

This means the scar continues to irritate the nervous system and may cause pain in completely different parts of the body.

Examples:

  • Abdominal surgery scars

  • Caesarean section scars

  • Old injury scars

  • Dental scars

In neural therapy, a small amount of local anesthetic is injected directly into or around the scar.

In some cases, this leads to immediate improvement.

Segment Therapy

Segment therapy is one form of neural therapy.

The physician injects the anesthetic into the skin, muscles or connective tissue of a specific body segment that is related to the painful area.

This method is often used for:

  • Back pain

  • Neck pain

  • Joint pain

  • Internal organ-related complaints

Trigger Point Injections in Neural Therapy

Neural therapy is often combined with trigger point treatment.

Painful muscle knots are injected with local anesthetic to reduce:

  • Muscle tension

  • Pain

  • Restricted movement

This is especially useful for:

  • Neck tension

  • Shoulder pain

  • Back pain

  • Sports injuries

Which Medications Are Used?

The most commonly used medications in neural therapy are:

  • Procaine

  • Lidocaine

These medications are local anesthetics and are used in very small amounts.

In some cases, additional substances may be used, such as:

  • Anti-inflammatory medication

  • Vitamin preparations

  • Muscle-relaxing medication

What Happens During Treatment?

Before treatment, the physician performs a medical examination and identifies the painful or irritated areas.

The injections are then given with a very fine needle.

Most patients describe the treatment as:

  • Quick

  • Well tolerated

  • Only mildly uncomfortable

A session usually lasts between 15 and 30 minutes.

What Happens After Neural Therapy?

After treatment, patients may experience:

  • Immediate pain relief

  • Improved mobility

  • Relaxed muscles

  • Temporary mild soreness at the injection site

  • Mild fatigue

It is recommended to:

  • Drink plenty of water

  • Avoid heavy physical activity for several hours

  • Rest if necessary

How Many Treatments Are Needed?

The number of sessions depends on the condition and how long it has existed.

  • Acute pain may improve after one treatment.

  • Chronic pain often requires several sessions.

  • Many patients notice significant improvement after 2 to 5 treatments.

Is Neural Therapy Safe?

Neural therapy is generally considered safe when performed by an experienced physician.

Possible mild side effects include:

  • Temporary redness

  • Small bruises

  • Mild soreness

  • Temporary dizziness

Serious complications are very rare.

Neural therapy should not be performed in patients with:

  • Allergy to local anesthetics

  • Severe infections

  • Certain blood clotting disorders
